In this summer 2006, it was decided that the portrait bust statue of the late Pope John Paul II Okumura created will be placed on public, next to the work by Bernini in the heart of the Vatican City.
It has been about 3 years since when the first portrait bust statue of the Pope John Paul II was made by Okumura, and after the audience the work was presented to the Pope when it was 25th anniversary of his throne in October 2003.
The portrait bust statues of the successive Popes had been made by Italian sculptors who represented each times, such as Donatello, Michelangelo, Bernini, Canova, Manzu, Greco. This display of the Pope portrait bust statue made by Okumura is very honorable to Japanese too, and it is also highly evaluated in Italy, where there has been the stage of sculpture.
| To make onefs portrait statue, Okumura meets and talks with him/her at the most suitable place for him/her to express not only the appearance but also his/her character. He sometimes even deforms some parts. He presents his works with the style, which is completely different from the computer-analyzed creating style. |
